SWEET WORMS

Worms wriggled up through the crumbling earth surrounding the old witch’s cabin. Dark vines, twisted like black licorice, snaked up the sides, concealing its secrets. Sticky hands tried to break in, both excited and scared of what could lurk inside.

The children huddled around the handcrafted house, trying to find the witch. A slice of crescent moon hung high in the sky, while the stars streamed down silvery light on the Samhain celebrations.

The blazing sky illuminated the little house in starlight, the rays glinting off the blade of an approaching butcher knife. The kids quickly moved aside, squealing with glee, while one precocious boy, Mikey, boldly plucked a plump worm from the dirt and dropped it deep into his mouth. The other children closed in on the cabin, like vultures surrounding a dying creature. Halloween night was alive with hungry children.

And Mikey’s mom had baked the perfect cake.
